How to run Tor relays safely as an ISP
About this talk:
Running a transit Internet Service Provider (ISP) that is dedicated to running Tor (torproject.org) relays must be done carefully. Emerald Onion, AS 396507, a US-based human rights nonprofit, has been online now for 7 years doing exactly this. I will discuss why we started, how we started, and go in detail about our operations that aim to create a safe space for privacy enhancing technologies such as Tor. Please bring questions or meet with me after to discuss!
Who should attend:
Anyone interested in operating Tor bridge relays or exit relays safely, running servers in a datacenter, starting and managing a nonprofit organization, keeping things cheap and finding funding for sustainability, obtaining and managing IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, managing abuse complaints or "user data" requests from law enforcement organizations, designing infrastructure for privacy over security.
About the presenter:
yawnbox (he/they) is a Dutch immigrant from the Pacific Northwest, USA, is autistic, and professionally is a security engineer. He is a co-founder of Emerald Onion (emeraldonion.org). yawnbox has worked for The Tor Project, ACLU of Washington, and co-founded the Seattle Privacy Coalition.
